The position of a Clinical Microbiologist, specializing in bacteriology and/or virology, at the Department of Clinical Microbiology, Landspítali – The University Hospital of Iceland, Reykjavík, is available for application.
The desired employment rate is 100% and the position is available by further agreement. The applicant is given the option of devoting him-/herself to either bacteriology or virology, or both.
Landspítali – The University Hospital of Iceland is a 650-bed tertiary care institution that serves more than 60% of the almost 380,000 inhabitants of Iceland and is a referral hospital for the entire country.
The Department of Clinical Microbiology is a clinical service and reference laboratory for Iceland in the fields of bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology. The department also works with the Directorate of Health and other health authorities to improve public health and gather epidemiological data.
The virology part of the department is located in Ármúli 1a, while the bacteriology part is mostly located on the grounds of Landspítali, at Barónsstígur.
The number of employees working in the department is abt. 80 of which there are currently eight Clinical Microbiologists and two ward doctors. In the first eight months of 2022, the department received abt. 490,000 samples, of which abt. 230,000 were due to Covid 19.
Helstu verkefni og ábyrgð
General medical work, requiring specialist education, at the Department of Clinical Microbiology.
- Professional supervision of the work units of the department and the selection, implementation and validation of new analytical methods.
- Initiative and participation in quality management.
- Interpretation and validation of research results.
- Expert advice, in the field of microbiology, to the staff of Landspítali and to other institutions and professionals.
- Participation in the Clinical Microbiologists shifts (back shifts with attendance on holidays and weekends).
- Teaching and guidance in the profession for healthcare workers and trainees.
- Participation in scientific research related to the respective specialties is desirable.
Hæfniskröfur
An Icelandic specialist license in bacteriology and/or virology, or fulfilling the conditions for such a licence, which would be obtained as soon as possible..
- Good knowledge of Icelandic and/or English or a Nordic language.
- Good human communication skills.
- Experience in teaching and scientific work is desirable.

Laun samkvæmt gildandi kjarasamningi sem fjármála- og efnahagsráðherra og Læknafélag Íslands hafa gert.
Full-time work is limited to the hospital only, cf. article 3.2.4 in the current collective agreement between doctors and the state.
